Black Hole

Sculpture, Installation

Inspired by the Panama Papers scandal, the work seeks to demonstrate how complacency by the public is allowing corrupt individuals to get away with murder and fraud. The work uses physical computing and sound under the heading of political commentary. The interactive element of the user touching the sculpture and affecting change is a reflection on how as individual citizens, even the smallest of gestures can make a difference. The more hands touching the sculpture, the slower the audio, further highlighting the idea of collective power.

Casting Plaster, Conductive Paint, Microcontroller Board, Select Audio Clips
The work includes a sculptural whirlpool shape and uses conductive paint and a microcontroller board.

The whirlpool was chosen as a metaphor for corrupt behaviour which pulls the perpetrator deeper, with an increasingly strong pull. As for the audio, I chose to use a speech given by the Prime Minister of Malta, who, together with other Members of Parliament, has been heavily implicated in corruption.
